Manga and Art Contest

(2pm -3:30 pm entries received at the Manga & Art Exhibit, 4pm Judging, 5pm winners announced at exhibit area)

Art enthusiasts will showcase their entries in the Matsuri Manga and Art contest. Manga, the Japanese nickname for magazine cartoons which are the rage in Japan, along with traditional art drawn with a “matsuri theme” will be displayed. 

 

Chado Urasenke Tea Ceremony Demonstration

The Way of Tea prepared by ancient standards for Japanese royalty is made especially for you to partake in at the 2011 Maui Matsuri.

 

Ikenobu Ikebana Demonstration & Display

Delicate oriental and modern floral arrangements amidst a serene and spiritual atmosphere are created by Hideko Zwick and her students.

 

Bonsai Demonstration & Display

Decades old, delicately shaped, and cared for Bonsai trees (miniature trees) will be on display.  Presented by Mr. Walter Ouye (2006 Japanese Cultural Society Nihon Bunka Awardee).

  

Maui Sugar Plantation Display

Presented by the A&B Sugar Museum

The Plantation Camp Registry is a project of the Museum.  It is a permanent collection of  names of people and families who lived in the plantation camps.  Anyone with sugar plantation roots is eligible to fill out a form and sign up.

 

Furoshiki (Gift wrapping ) Demonstrations

Presented by Roselani

Furoshiki is fabric typically used for carrying items, a Japanese “green” bag, since it is washable and reusable.  Hands on demonstrations will allow you to try your hand at wrapping beautiful gifts.

 

MOA Kohrinka Activity & Display

A miniature flower arrangement to take home and appreciate what Nature has to offer.

 

Peace Rememberance Activity & Display

Origami, the art of folding paper to create a representation of an object using geometric folds by

Ruth Yamamura and her group MAFCE.

  
Shakuhachi Performance

Daniel Lane will perform shakuhachi music periodically during our exhibits demonstration time.
