Free Kodomo (Kids) Corner Crafts and Activities

Gyotaku - (Japanese translation - gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") a traditional form of Japanese fish printing. Make your own Gyotaku using rubber fish, brayer and paint. (By Representative Gil Keith-Agaran)

Hachimaki Craft - Make a stylized headband, worn as a symbol of perseverance or effort by the wearer. It can also be used during the Maui Matsuri obon dance. (By Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii)

Kikaida Masks and Coloring Pages - Cut out and wear a Kikaida Mask or one of his friends to wear at the Maui Matsuri. (By Senator Shan Tsutsui)

Paper Kokeshi Bookmark and Doll Craft - Color and cut out a paper Kokeshi Doll and bookmark to take home. (By Representative Kyle Yamashita)

Temari - Japanese embroidered hand ball, used in handball games. (By Mayor Alan Arakawa)

Uchiwa (Fan) Craft - Make your own paper Uchiwa (fan) and use it at the Maui Matsuri obon dance and obon dances throughout the summer.

Kendama Game - a traditional Japanese toy which consists of a wooden, hammer-like object with a ball, connected by a string. A number of skills will be learned. (By Lahainaluna High School Japanese Club, 2 – 5 pm)
