Maui Matsuri is welcoming several off-island guests onto its Entertainment Stage. Be sure to review the Maui Matsuri schedule of events so you don’t miss them!

Internet sensations and ’ukulele phenoms Honoka & Azita are taking the world by storm with their dynamic and energetic performances, and they’ll be here with us this year to celebrate Maui Matsuri. Having amassed millions of views and a growing fan base across the globe, this duo can be legitimately dubbed as social media superstars! The two young ladies were named the 2013 International ’Ukulele Contest Grand Champions and were awarded the prestigious title of MVP. In 2015, the two recorded on the Island Style ’Ukulele 2 album, which received the 2015 Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Compilation Album of the Year. Honoka & Azita then released their self-entitled EP album in 2016, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Top 100 World Music Albums Chart, and are currently in the studio recording their highly anticipated full-length album set to be released in 2018. Enjoy their music at both the Musical Extravaganza (Friday, May 4) and the Festival day (Saturday, May 5)

Also gracing the Maui Matsuri entertainment stage is the San Francisco based Awa Odori group Awakko-Ren. Founded in 2011 by Tokushima Kenjin-Kai, the group practices and performs throughout the year sharing Awa Odori -o the largest dance festival in Japan. For over 400 years, the city of Tokushima has celebrated the festival in its streets each August. The dance consists of two styles of dance – one feminine and one masculine. Catch a performance by Awakko-Ren at the Musical Extravaganza (Friday, May 4), then see them again on the Maui Matsuri Festival Day where participants will have the opportunity to learn the dance!

Kyle Chew, an active performer around Hawaii, joins Maui Matsuri on stage with his Japanese shakuhachi and shinobue flutes. Under the guidance of Grand Master Riley Lee, Kyle primarily focuses his studies on the traditional shakuhachi music know as Honkyoku. He has performed at numerous events through Maui, Kauai, and Oahu, including the Japanese Consulate in Honolulu as well as on the mainland. He was one of the organizers of the 2014 Kauai Shakuhachi Festival, and also enjoys practicing shodo, Japanese calligraphy.

 

Frank De Lima is one of Hawai’i’s most popular and beloved comedians. For 40 years, this award-winning comic has been entertaining local residents and tourists alike with his zany parodies, outrageous sense of humour, and spontaneous creativity. Frank’s specialty is translating issues - such as current events, fads, attitudes, and people - into fresh musical parodies.
Comedy has been ingrained in Frank’s life since childhood. While growing up in Pauoa Valley on the Island of O’ahu, Frank realized that he had a natural talent for making family and friends smile, especially at themselves.
"The ability to draw laughter or a smile is one of the greatest gifts you can give to people," states the proclaimed Portuguese Prince of Hawaiian Comedy. "Laughter makes a happy heart.
